An analysis of Jack Ma as a transformational leader Jack Ma is the founder of Alibaba Group, one of the most visited online shopping companies in the world. The company relies on Ma’s dynamic and ever-evolving kind of leadership. Forbes magazine ranks Jack Ma as the fifth richest individual worth a $36billion fortune as of 24th January 2022 (Jack Ma, 2022). Jack Ma has a significant following on social media, with 656.2k followers on Twitter and slightly over 800k on Facebook, accounts which have not been updated since October 2020. However, Jack Ma is no novice to controversy. A significant chunk of his encounters with the China government emanates from the growing criticism against his businesses. Recently, he became a public enemy, with some referring to him as a “villain”, an “evil capitalist” and “bloodsucking ghost”. So much trouble had he put himself into that the Chinese government opened an antitrust investigation into Ant Group, the mother company of Alibaba, the e-commerce powerhouse he co-founded. The New York Times reports that the authorities also curtailed Ant Group’s planned initial public offering (IPO) after Ma publicly chastised financial regulators for obsession with minimizing risk, accusing the banks of behaving like ‘pawnshops’ by lending only to those who can offer collateral (Yuan, 2020). The study revealed that individualised consideration and intellectual stimulation had a positive relationship with the performance of banking sector employees. That relationship was enhanced by effectively empowering employees and also fostering an environment that encourages learning, creativity and innovation. The study recommends that leaders in any bank’s section have to empower employees and foster the learning, creativity and innovation environment as the preconditions for enhanced employees’ performance. However, the study was done in the Dar es Salaam city and therefore limiting the generalisation of the results due to contextual differences in sub-Saharan countries.
