The American political system revolves around two main parties; the Democratic Party and the Republican Party. The two parties have dominated the US political scene for a very long time since 1860 (SparkNotes, 2015). This means that the presidency as well as the control of both the Senate and Congress revolves around the two parties. However, there are other parties like the Libertarian Party, the Green Party, and the Constitution Party among others, which do not a have a controlling stake in the American party system. The big question that lingers is whether there is a need to have more two political parties. There is a need to have only two parties because it creates stability, boosts moderation, and enhance an element of easiness among the voters.
One advantage of having two party systems is based on the notion that it creates stability. Only one party can have a controlling stake in both the Senate and the Congress making it easy to implement party policies. The other party acts as the minority and is tasked with monitoring the performance of the ruling party. It is vital to note that a stable political system translates into an excellent economic growth. This is evident in the United States economic system, which keeps on improving every year and is never subject to changes in the political party system (Riley, 2015).
Another reason in support of a two party political system is that it boosts moderation. Moderation, in this case, means that the two parties have a responsibility to appeal to all the social classes in the country. The manifestos of both parties should address the need for every citizen regardless of their social class in the society. This would be different if there were more than two parties in which case some parties would only yearn to appeal to a certain social and political class. The two parties must be moderate in order to appeal to the voting masses (Wheelan, 2013).
The other reason in support of the two party political systems is related with easiness in the mode of election. The election overseeing body is only required to arrange elections for only two parties. The online voting system, which is popular in the United States, allows the voter to choice from two options. This simplifies the voting system not only for the voter but also for the country’s electoral body (SparkNotes, 2015). This would be different in a multi-party system where the number of candidates could be even more than five, which creates confusion for the voters.
