It has been noted with a lot of concern that health care spending in most countries is growing fast and in an unsustainable rate. Consequently, policy makers have had hard times seeking ways to slow the growth and eventually reduce the overall spending without interference to the quality of medical services and care (Somers & Somers, 1977). Resources wastes revolves around health care quality of services, medicine, and technology.
Health care resources and efforts have been wasted in improper care coordination. This is one of the major problems which occur when patients experience disjointed health care (Somers & Somers, 1977). Poorly managed care transitions from health care system to another are a good example. Researchers have shown that improper health care coordination have resulted in declines in functional status especially for the chronically ill, unnecessary hospital readmissions and arising avoidable complications.
Secondly, as argued by Reisman (2007), there have been failures of health care delivery translating to resources wastes. Some health personnel poorly execute their work. Some of them fail to adopt the best care practices such as patients’ safety best practices and other effective preventive health care practices. Higher costs have been incurred due to this category of waste. It has also led to patient injuries as well as worst clinical outcomes.
Complexity in health care administration is another category of waste. In some cases, excess spending have been noted while attending to private health insurance agencies, government or other accrediting companies due to inefficient and bureaucratic procedures (Reisman, 2007).
