Is it right for wealthy people to leave most of their money to their children?
Today, more than ever before in recent history, there are more people languishing in poverty. The gap between the rich and the poor has widened in the recent past. A recent study by Oxfam found that the top three richest people in United States, Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates and Warren Buffet have as much wealth (nearly $350 Billion) as the bottom half of United States’ population CITATION Chu18 \l 1033 (Collins). This wealth has a total of 10 heirs. Bezos has 4 kids Buffet 3 and Gates 3. Averagely, each would inherit nearly $35 billion and would still position them in the top 20 richest American’s list. Many people would wish to be inheritors of this fortune but I would argue otherwise. It is not right for the wealthy to leave most of their money to their children.
The goal of life is not entirely to be rich but to be happy. Being rich and having more resources at your disposal seems to eliminate many factors that can lead to misery but does not necessarily make anyone happier. Thus, heresy to the firmly held belief that wealth brings happiness but I would argue that the process of earning the fortune is more enjoyable and fulfilling than the end result.
