Whether People should behave morally only because of the general societal advantage or not
Regardless of the school of thought or Society that one believes or originates, people should not fall prey of acting ethically because doing so is good for the society at large.
According to Overing (2013), morality is a debatable and subjective term that communicates different meanings to different people. What is morally upright to one individual or Society may not be favorable to other groups of people. In the definition of morality is the notion of rationality and the ideal of objective cognition that makes people do good things rather than destructive things. The overall good to the Society made possible by morality, in return, communicates that a person should sacrifice his or her interests for the sake of social affairs. That way, people observing the importance of the larger societies at the expense of their own best interest will end up losing their autonomy. Hence, acting morally only because it benefits the bigger Society undermines personal freedom that is the fundamental element of rights and privileges of people in a democratic society.
