The choice between high salary and job satisfaction has intrigued human beings for ages. The scenario has attracted conflicting debates as well as perplexing applicants in the labor market. According to the job satisfaction point of view, happiness is a prerequisite for any workplace assignment. On the other hand, pecuniary motivation has been found to be a critical aspect when making professional choices. Although money is among the essential considerations when making a career choice, passion should take precedence since without job satisfaction an employee may lack the required impetus in an organization.
Job satisfaction is an important consideration because it can lead to improved productivity in a firm. Noe et al. (2006) found out that workers, who are passionate, tend to be more productive than those who are money oriented. Besides, happiness in a workplace can also aid in reducing cases of absenteeism. Smerek and Peterson (2007) found out that workers who choose careers due to financial motives are characterized with more cases of absenteeism compared to those, who choose careers out of passion. Non-attendance to duties can arise due to changes in motives. It is a fact that a person, who joined a vocation because of high salary, can lack a motive of continuing to work, especially if he or she becomes wealthy or finds an alternative business. As Al Zoubi, (2012) argues, passion serves as a bond between an employee and an organization.
In conclusion, job satisfaction is an important consideration because it can lead to improved productivity in organizations. This is contrary to a situation where a worker is money minded or attached to a firm due to monetary rewards. Happiness in a firm can also aid in reducing cases of absenteeism. Passion can increase workplace engagement and enable workers to be more responsive to their duties. Additionally, being passionate can reduce cases of resignations, especially during the period of economic hardship.
