How the American Dream is Imagined and Embodied in Willie Loman’s Character
The American dream varied, but for most, each civilian to needed one equality in terms of achieving wealthy status and growth. Many Americans wanted to move from the rural areas to cities such as “The Big Apple” in search for better opportunities. Throughout the story, we examine the men of Willy’s family, attempting to achieve the American dream each in their own way, but we also watch them as their expectations clash with the reality. Arthur Miller writes “Death of a Salesman” to present the theme of a possibility of a failed American Dream. To better illustrate this theme, Miller employs literary techniques such as characterization to present the clash of the American Dream with reality through the eyes of the character, Willie. By examining the experience of reality of this character, the reader gets a better idea regarding the history behind the American dream.
