The patriarchal orientation of the society culminated in the oppression of women in different realms of development. Male dominance contributed not only to the sidelining of women in setting the development agenda, but has also been an avenue for gender-based oppression, with women being on the receiving end. Women have been pressing for changes in the structures of the society, such that they can operate at more or less the same level as men. The achievements vary from one region to the other. This paper examines the women’s rights discourse in the United States. It holds that although gender equality in America can be considered more progressive when being compared to other parts of the world, some dominant social issues such as racism and ethnicity continue to be an impediment to the realization of the rights of women, especially when one considers the plight of women of color in the socio-economic spheres of life.
