Women’s Expected Role in the Pursuit of the American Dream
In the play, who is afraid of the Virginia wolf? The themes of sex, marriage, power, and visions of America clearly bring out the expected role of women in the pursuit of the American dream. First, in the theme of marriage, the relationship between George and Martha and Nick and Honey reveals the role of women in binding marriages together which directly contributes to the overall success of a couple. The two marriages can be easily judged on their success based on the ability of the woman in the relationship to bind the couple together.
The use of sex as a battle tool to gain control and influence is exhibited through most characters. Martha advances sexually towards winning Georges heart not because of love but simply because of the desire to gain influence through associating with wealthy men. The theme of, use of sex to gain power, advances more as the play sets up scenes to display the struggle for power between couples. The relentless battle between George and Martha is all based on the struggle for power. These two display contrary characters especially for women towards building a society where only hard work would earn you status as envisaged in the American dream. It’s the role of women to control such vices in the society such as sex for money and power. Women are also expected to be supportive of their husband as opposed to competing with them for power and control.
In an ingenious set of scenes, the marriage between George and Martha and that between Nick and Horney are used to represent the two competing economies, America and the Soviet Union consecutively. The failures presented in the George and Martha couple are the challenges that the American dream was facing. The role of women is pivotal to the success of the American dream as it is for Martha to re-correct the failures of her husband George and unite the couple stronger than before.

Susan and Selena as women have a collective dream of success. They are optimistic about the ability of America to fulfill their respective dreams and achieve a successful life. Unlike some of the Men in the play such as Willy, their dreams, hopes, and plans are not crowded by optimism to be blinded to the reality which significantly contributes to their success as compared to men characters.
