The U.S. president, Donald Trump has, for the major part of his term, faced impeachment threats for engaging in unconstitutional activities before and while in office. Gerhardt (2019) notes that it is barely two years since Trump took over the leadership of the country and the country is divided over whether or not he should remain in office. However, an impeachment should not be considered as a substitute for election but only as a last resort to address misbehaviors of public officials, and in the current case, the president. While the initial talks of impeachment started as early as 2017, the latest incidence in which a recorded phone call transcript between Trump and Ukrainian President, Zelenskyi implicates the U.S. president of abuse of power is going to, undoubtedly, increase the chances of impeaching him.
Abuse of power is a serious offense. The Trump – Zelenskyi call revealed a case of use of power for personal gains (Chang, 2019; Henden, 2019). Trump abused his power by asking Zelenskyi to investigate Joe Biden, Trump’s political rival. A further analysis of the call transcript shows that the president subjugated the national security as well as the country’s interests to his political impulses. Such an obvious abuse of power is impeachable.
