A High-Fat, High-Protein, Low-Carbohydrates Fad Diet
Fad diets refer to the food plans sold to lose weight in the fastest time possible. Most often, these diets eliminate foods with vital nutrients needed for good health in the body (Cleveland Clinic, 2022). The macromolecules we eat include carbohydrates, fats or lipids, nucleic acids, and proteins. An example of a fad diet that would change the amount of consumption for some of these macromolecules is a high-fat, high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet. This fad diet aims to lose weight quickly and usually has low plant proteins, fiber, and calcium. This diet changes the number of macromolecules that one ought to eat since it advocates for the intake of low carbohydrates and high amounts of fats and proteins than the body needs (Mandal, 2022).
If an individual continues with this fad diet of high-fat, high-protein, and low-carbohydrate for an extended time, specific health problems could occur. First, a high-fat diet leads to the intake of saturated fats and high cholesterol, which poses a significant risk of heart disease (Mandal, 2022). It is because an individual chooses food items like bacon, red fatty meat, and butter while aiming to get a high-fat content. Moreover, the individual could suffer from the dangers associated with high protein diets, like kidney stones, chronic kidney disease, and indigestion problems. Due to low calcium associated with the diet, an individual could experience bone health issues like osteoporosis. Moreover, the decreased fiber content in the diet leads to constipation and indigestion problems. Since there is a low consumption of carbohydrates, ketosis could occur. It is true since the body shifts from using carbohydrates as the primary energy source to using fats which are broken down into ketones (Mikstas, 2021).
