Addressing Racial Disparities in Teenage Pregnancies
Despite progress being made in reducing the rate of teenage pregnancies, racial disparities still exist
By author
Adolescent pregnancy remains a significant health problem despite declining rates in the last three decades. The United States teen pregnancy rate is among the highest in the developed world. Statistics show that 18 in every 1000 females 15-19 years become pregnant (CDC, 2019). Consequences of teenage pregnancy often include the loss of social, educational, and vocational opportunities, perpetuating the poverty cycle and making both the parents and children rely on public income maintenance and health programs. Racial and ethnic disparities exist in the rate of teenage pregnancies, with black and Hispanic girls twice as likely to get pregnant compared to their white peers (CDC, 2019). The disparities linked to social determinants of health and health occur in three ways: quality of care received, access to medical care, and exposures to stressors throughout life. Therefore, addressing social determinants of health will reduce racial and ethnic disparities in teenage pregnancy and maintain a decline in the rates.
