Coaching and mentoring should be a core competency of nurses prepared at graduate level. Coaching and mentoring is especially critical in my graduate specialization. Midwives are mandated with the task of providing guidance to pregnant women regarding how to act and what to do whilst pregnant (Mander & Fleming, 2014). The teaching provided is endeavored at enabling the women to meet their most immediate of needs (Peate & Hamilton, 2013). Quality coaching and mentoring avails quality holistic patient care of the women. It is thus a fundamental feature in midwifery. In developing the capacity of nurses, coaching and mentoring then have to be understood as being core competencies of nurses.
In my advanced practicing role as a midwife, one coaching activity that would feature predominantly in my care undertakings entails coaching on blood pressure. I will be coaching women no how to keep their blood pressure normal. According to Ovesen & Jensen (2012), abnormal blood pressure enhances the risk for complications during pregnancy. The need to coach women towards this regard has been motivated by the need to reduce the potential for the occurrence of complications during pregnancy. In equipping women with the requisite knowledge on how to reduce the risk of gestational hypertension, I will be able to ensure a safe and successful pregnancy.
One mentoring activity that I might want to complete with a mentor, that would help me acclimate to my new advance practice role, is to have group therapy with pregnant woman to demonstrate how to maintain a positive health status. Group mentoring has been identified as being significantly potent in aiding in the adoption of healthy lifestyles (Lussier, 2015). To some extent, they are more effective than individual mentoring sessions. In such an environment, I will be able to learn, first hand, from my mentor on the most effective mentoring approach to employ when in a group setting. In such an environment, I will be able to acclimate to my new advance practice role.
