Major advantage of dietary supplement is it prevents diseases. For example, taking folic acid during pregnancy prevents in spina bifida. Vitamin D also helps to prevent diseases like cognitive decline, cancer, osteoporosis and other health issues. This is according to Mayo Clinic. Another advantage is that it may help in treating diseases. there is no enough evidence for the manufacturers to support this. Taking a garlic supplement helps in lowering blood pressure levels. This was researched and proven (Alig, 2018). It also helps in preventing a deficiency such as iron deficiency (Lehman, 2019).
Hindering your body from absorbing food nutrients is one of the disadvantages of dietary supplements. This happens when the nutrients act against each other. Overdosing is another disadvantage.
