Introduction
Biodiesel, as the word suggests is a form of renewable energy source made from animal fats and vegetable oils. Unlike diesel that is obtained as one of the fractions of petroleum biodiesel, biodiesel is from natural sources. Different vegetable oils can be used. For example soybean oil, canola oil, corn oil, mustard oil, coconut oil, hemp, sunflower oil, algae oil, rapeseed oil, recycled cooking oil and flax. Soybean oil is the most common source of biodiesel in the United States. Biodiesel is clean burning and is approved by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It is the first Advanced Biofuel in large-scale commercial production in almost every state in the country. It is readily available national wide from the producers, marketers, petroleum distributors or public retailers.
Historical background.
The science of Trans esterification was conducted in the late 19th century even before the invention of biodiesel engines. The scientist Rudolf Diesel run an iron cylinder powered solely by peanut oil on 10th August 1893 in Germany. In his honor, 10th August was set aside as the International Biodiesel Day for his remembrance. His idea came from a small French engine which was initially intended to use mineral oil but he realized that it could also utilize vegetable oil.
