Caffeine is a Cognitive Enhancer
Caffeine consumptions are among the most discussed issues in the neuroscience world. Some scientists consider the substance as beneficial while others insist that it is destructive to human beings and animals. Despite the controversies, coffee consumptions continue to increase, especially with the increasing pressure to performs at work and in-home places. People need coffee for daily functioning due to their effects in reducing sleep and keeping an individual super active. Consequently, caffeine, especially in coffee, acts as a cognitive enhancer. Even though caffeine use leads to sleep loss, through attention elevation and the reducing of neurodegenerative risks, caffeine works as a cognitive enhancer.
Moderate caffeine consumption improves attention. Konishi (2018), conducted a study of 100 subjects using a random sampling method, separating the groups in half, with one group consuming caffeine, to test the effects on attention using the harsh-braking test. Based on the study, caffeine consumption improved executive functions such as alertness sue to increased awareness due to a higher performance of the cognitive psychomotor (Konishi, 2018). The study coincides with many observations of late-night workers, such as writers who often mention coffee as a potent stimulant towards an increased level of attention. However, research cautions against excessive use of caffeine as destructive to cognition in the long run (Konishi, 2018). Therefore, a limited intake of caffeine is a cognitive enhancer towards an improved attention span.
Taking caffeine decreases neurodegenerative risks. Athletes and sports people use coffee as a stimulant to enable them to work and train for long hours. O'Callaghan, Muurlink, & Reid, (2018) associates the experience with a sustenance of the dopaminergic neurons or motor symptoms prevention. The healthy brain function and reduction of potential mental illness such as Alzheimer’s, which is a significant cognition problem. Patients with the conditions can be diagnosed with using enough caffeine to manage its risks. In that manner, caffeine acts as a cognitive enhancer.
Conversely, caffeine leads to sleep deprivation. O'Callaghan, Muurlink, & Reid, (2018), explained that although the caffeine can improve attention level, there is a risk of developing brain damage with an extreme lack of sleep. Brain damage occurs in the prefrontal cortex after a reduction of the glucose metabolic activity which eventually destroys the capacity of the brain to function correctly, leading to is
