Drug and substance abuse is the primary cause of many health problems affecting people all over the world. In America, about 22 million people are directly or indirectly affected by drug or alcohol problem (Aungst, 2011). Most community health issues, for example, domestic violence, are caused by substance abuse. Substance abuse is the use of the substance, like alcohol, in a manner that is harmful to someone or other people in the community (Swartz, 2012). Substance abuse involves the use of psychoactive substances in which the consumer uses the substance in the manner and quantity that are unsafe to themselves or others (Johnson & Grant, 2005). In the community, substance abuse has affected many people negatively. There has been increasing family stress in most households due to substance abuse. Additionally, due to health complications that are associated with substance abuse, many people in the community have been forced to spend enormous sums of their disposable income seeking treatment.

Substances abuse has very many adverse effects to people in the area. Some of these effects include teen pregnancy, domestic violence, HIV, and child abuse (Swartz, 2012). The following are ways in which substance abuse influence domestic violence, teen pregnancy, HIV, and child abuse.
Due to substance abuse, some teenagers are forced to drop out of school due to addiction and lack of interest in education. When teenagers continue abusing substances like alcohol and drugs, they are unable to control their emotions and, as a result, they engage into unprotected sexual activities (Johnson & Grant, 2005). These sexual activities sometimes lead to unwanted pregnancy, teenage pregnancy.
Unprotected sexual activities associated with the substance abuser may get HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Additionally, people engaged in substance abuse may engage in immoral activities, such as prostitution, in order to get money for buying drugs and other substances. Through these activities, substance user may contract sexually transmitted diseases like HIV (Swartz, 2012).
When abused, most substances affect the reasoning capacity of an individual. In some instance, the substance abusers believe that they have more power to control other people in the community and at the family level (Johnson & Grant, 2005). Due to failure to reason correctly, substance addicts always argue and quarrel with people in the family causing domestic violence (Swartz, 2012).
People with the problem of substance abuse spend most of their time looking for and abusing those substances (Swartz, 2012). In the case of parents, they lack time to take care of their children thus abusing and neglecting them. Since most substance abuser lack child bearing skills, they are known for abusing their children (Johnson & Grant, 2005).
