Community Resources Student Name Department of Nursing, Capella University NURS-FPX4060: Coordinating Patient-Centered Care March 15, 2025 Community Resources Clara Barton, a civil war nurse, established the American Red Cross more than 125 years ago. During the Spanish American War, she participated in the first worldwide disaster relief operation and served as a Red Cross leader for 23 years (Jones, 2012). The Red Cross offers disaster relief aid, military support, lifesaving education and certification, and collaboration with foreign organizations. They have been gathering, analyzing, and providing blood to people in need for the last 50 years. Now, they have 20 international locations in addition to 600 local chapters. There are 30,000 staff members and more than 500,000 volunteers. Despite having a government charter, they are supported by private donations, with 91 cents of every dollar going towards humanitarian causes (American Red Cross, 2021). The mission, vision, and contribution of the organization to public health "Allicate alleviating sufferings in the face of crises by harnessing the strength of volunteers and the kindness of giver/donor" is the American Red Cross's stated objective for 2021. Seven guiding principles form the foundation of their public service. Humanity, impartiality, independence, neutrality, universality, unity and selfless service are some of them. Humanity entails helping everyone without distinction and with the primary goal of easing human suffering. Any class, race, religion, nationality, or political allegiance is irrelevant to them. They will always maintain their neutrality when they are assisting during a hostile period. They uphold their independence and abide by the legal frameworks of the nations in which they offer humanitarian assistance. They also think that all tasks should be the same everywhere. Additionally, the service is always provided voluntarily (American Red Cross, 2021). Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion (DEI) is a division of the organization. They always work to become culturally competent because it is essential to the organization's success. They constantly hold "diversity in gender identities, backgrounds sexual orientation, cultures, experiences, and thoughts" in the highest regard (American Red Cross, 2021). They can serve all various populations both domestically and internationally by doing this. Their decision to use vendors who are women-owned, minority-owned, or owned by veterans or handicapped veterans is another aspect of their diversity program. Their curriculum includes a program for mentoring that enables individuals to overcome any financial, social, or physical obstacles to starting their own businesses. (The 2021 American Red Cross). The American Red Cross is involved in a worldwide effort to lessen the incidence of drowning, which is one of the major causes of mortality globally and affects people of all races, ages, genders, and socioeconomic backgrounds (Beale-Tawfeeq et al., 2020). Racial differences in drowning death rates exist in the US, and public health initiatives that support aquatic education have been blamed for this. According to Beale-Tawfeeq et al. (2020), the American Red Cross takes an active role in initiatives to improve the availability of water safety classes in underprivileged communities, as there are obstacles that may prohibit some communities from providing swimming lessons of any kind. Impact of Funding Sources, Legislation and Policy Despite being a kind of governance structure and having a congressional charter, the American Red Cross (2021) maintains its independence. They are acknowledged as a separate national entity that contributes to the fulfillment of the United States' responsibilities under the Geneva Convention. This also requires them to help military families and implement a disaster relief mechanism both domestically and abroad. The American National Red Cross Governance Modernization Act, which was passed into law in May 2007, modified the organization's prior congressional charter to permit collaboration with the government while preserving its autonomous tax-exempt status (American Red Cross, 2021). Impact of Organizations on Safety and Public Health Additionally, the American Red Cross helps with preparation and planning for emergencies. They provide tools, checklists, and training films to help with preparation before, during, and after an emergency. By offering first aid, CPR, BLS, and CNA training, they also have an impact on public health. They will also collaborate with bigger firms to help them comply with OSHA regulations. Blood donations are gath...
