Introduction
Skillful diagnosis is a critical aspect of the clinical assessment and appraisal process. Today, the application of diagnosis permeates the mental health professions. It is clear that integrating diagnoses and using them in treatment planning has become a fundamental part of what all mental health experts do. The DSM produced by the American Psychiatric Association furnishes a common communication language and standard criteria for the mental disorders classification. It is commonly applied in the United States. Moreover, varying degrees around the globe, by clinicians, psychiatric drug directives agencies, health insurance organizations, policy makers, and pharmaceutical companies. There have been five DSM manual revisions since the first publication in 1952. They include; DSM-I, DSM-II, DSM-III, DSM-III-R, DSM-IV, and DSM-IV-TR. The DMS manual revisions can be used to analyze the case study of Jose and Raul.
Diagnosis for Raul
All children experience moments when they behave abnormally. The cause to this might be a child undergoing through different phases as they grow and become more independent. With the parents’ assist, cares, and teachers, most of the children learn to act appropriately. Occasionally, a child will have a fury tantrum or even an outburst of aggressive or destructive behavior; however, this is often nothing to worry. For instance in Raul’s case, due to severe violence cause by his father, he has adopted destructive behavior that needs a diagnosis process. He requires t be taken to a psychologist profession or child psychiatric. Due to his behavior, Raul can be described as experiencing an antisocial personality disorder. This means that he is always in trouble or the wrong side. From Raul’s characteristics described by the case study, Raul is classified in the DSM-IV nomenclature under the code Axis II, which means that he possesses personality disorders and mental retardation (Hare, Hart, & Harpur 2004).
Diagnosis for Jose
The case study describes Jose as nervous and shy. He speaks in a barely audible voice. He experiences difficulties getting out of bed in the morning, most of the day he experiences daydreams, bites his nails continuously, at night he wets the bed, he cries a lot, and he does not connect well with other children. From these characteristics, Jose can be taken to a child psychiatric or a psychologist profession for effective diagnosis because he is experiencing schizoid personality disorder. Thus, he is classified under the DSM-IV nomenclature under the Axis I code meaning that he experiences clinical disorders, major mental disorders and learning disorders (Morey, 2001).
Evaluation and opinions in Raul and Jose symptoms differences
Conduct disorder in children can originate from many different possible reasons. A child can develop an oppositional defiant disorder if he or she has certain genes leading to antisocial behavior, experience difficulties learning good social and acceptable behaviors, have a difficult temperament or experience learning or reading difficulties, making it hard for him or her to understand and take part in lessons. Despite Raul and Jose experience similar abusive background, their symptoms differ from each other. The reason behind this is that, Jose is more stressed than Raul is because he experiences child abuse from both the father and his elder brother who is given the authority to look after the younger brother and sister (Newman, Patterson, & Kosson, 2003).
