Drug tolerance refers to a state in which the sensitivity of a pharmacologically active substance is progressively low in the body at a given regular dose due to its use over a long period. This, however, is because of the brain’s adaptation to increased concentration of the drug for production of the same psychological effects as achieved by normal doses. There are two types of drug tolerance, that is, metabolic and functional tolerance.
