Edward Shortliffe is a renowned pioneer in biomedical informatics that was born in America in 1947. He is canadian. He is also known to be a physician (specialized in internal medicine) and a computer scientist as well. This already shows that Edward was interested in medicine and IT. Edward was recognized in the area of artificial intelligence in the medical field and therefore developed MYCIN, which, was the first artificial intelligence system (Greenes, Buchanan, & Ellison,2007). He teamed up with Stan Cohen where their main aim was to come up with a computerized program that would allow clinical practice review boards to determine when clinicians had made any errors in their process of prescribing drugs. This was a program that greatly criticized physicians. In his initial works on artificial intelligence, which was considered to be in its adolescent stages, he managed to link hardware technology, communications and computer science to promote better patient care. Over the years, his inventions have seen great improvement in the field of medicine. Among the highly applauded achievements of Edward Shortliff was him being the founder of biomedical informatics.
