The Effects of the IOM Reports on Education and Practice
The current complex health system requires the nurses to be very efficient in their duties so that they can meet the challenges in the day-to-day operations. A nurse in practice in the modern health system is faced with complex issues that require them to be highly qualified to meet the needs (Greiner & Knebel, 2003). The current complex health system requires the nurses to be very efficient in their duties so that they can meet the challenges in the day-to-day operations. A nurse in practice in the modern health system is faced with complex issues that require them to be highly qualified to meet the needs (Greiner & Knebel, 2003). The changing health care system needs reforms that capture the roles of nurses. In November 2010, such changes were introduced to define the roles of the nurses in the ever-changing health care system. The reforms in the nursing profession were aimed at eliminating the barriers that inhibit nurses from delivering efficiently in a rapidly changing health care system. Overcoming these obstacles through reforms in Nursing education and practice would ensure that the nurses are well-positioned to initiate change and advance health
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) released a special report called “The Future of Nursing: Lead Change, Advancing Health.” The reforms phasing over the next decade were aimed at expanding the scope of the nursing profession to meet the overwhelming challenges of the health care system by 2020 (Glasgow & Prevost, 2012). In the current situation, some barriers prevent the nurses in practice from executing their duties effectively in the rapidly changing health care system and the rapidly changing setting.
The IOM report on nursing puts forward eight recommendations that revolve around four issues regarding the nursing profession. The recommendations aimed at eliminating the barriers in the nursing profession that inhibit them from delivering efficiently. One is that nurses should utilize to the full extent their education and training (KA, 2016). Meaning that they should take the leading role in initiating change in the evolving health care system. The reform to enable the nurses to practice to the full extent of their training and education gives the nurses the leading role in the health care system, and this defines their role in the future of the health care system.
The core competencies recommended by the IOM report are geared towards reforming the education and practice of nurses. Nurse educators can use these core competencies to transform nursing education (KA, 2016). Nurse educators can achieve this transformation in the nursing practice by inspiring excellence in the nurse educator practice. Additionally, the integration of the standards of practice in the education curricula of nurses, evaluation processes, and faculty role descriptions would revolutionalize the nursing practice and education significantly.
