Lack of sleep has been revealed to disturb individuals’ cognitive abilities and operant memory. Contemporary lifestyle factors related to work have been cited as the most common causes of sleep deprivation. Such factors include insufficient physical exercise, excessive stimulant consumption, and obesity among others. Factors such as sleep disorders, aging, illnesses and other causes such as disruption of one’s circadian rhythm and stress are known to cause sleep deprivation. Such deprivation has neurobiological consequences. It is therefore essential to evaluate the effects of progressive sleep deprivation and its impact on the brain and various other domains. Constant sleep deprivation not only leads to weariness but also significantly impacts brain activity resulting in vision disturbance, poor concentration, poor memory, longer reaction times, reduced performance precision, and emotional disorders. This paper will focus on the effects of sleep deprivation on cognitive abilities.
