Emotional Intelligence Student Name Institutional Affiliation Course Number, Name Instructor Due Date Emotional intelligence (EI) is the capability to control your emotions and be aware of how other people feel. It requires a person to be self-conscious, regulated, empathetic, motivated, and have good social skills. Individuals who have high emotional intelligence are in tune with their feelings and understand what those emotions mean. They also know how their emotions may affect their behavior and that of those around them. Even though it is difficult to determine how others feel or act, those with high emotional intelligence can see past these people’s behavior and identify the emotions that make them act the way they do to understand how to deal with them (Wen 2019). Given the nature of the work environment, healthcare professionals must have emotional intelligence when dealing with patients and also at the leadership level. To enhance communication with patients, healthcare professionals need to understand their emotions and those of their patients. Empathy makes it easy to have difficult conversations, and it will often result in patient satisfaction. The settings surrounding healthcare are, most of the time, stressful. Emotional intelligence is, therefore, necessary to facilitate interactions among healthcare professionals and prevent burnout. By recognizing stressful feelings and their impact, healthcare staff are in a better position to manage the stress and have the clarity and calmness needed to deal with difficult situations (Kadadi 2020). Emotional intelligence is a vital aspect of leadership, especially if an organization aspires to have a motivated team and exemplary performance. Leaders must know how to regulate their emotions and how to care for others. Emotional awareness makes a leader a good listener and creates a safe space for employees to share their insights. It makes a leader learn how to consider all perspectives before making decisions on behalf of the team. In healthcare, emotional intelligence enables a leader to create a positive work environment that motivates the staff to overcome complex dynamics. The leaders make decisions and policies while considering their staff and patients. An empathetic leader makes the staff feel appreciated, and patient satisfaction is prioritized. It increases productivity at work because the staff feels free to brainstorm ideas and inputs that will enhance performance (Miao et al 2018). After taking the emotional intelligence test, I discovered I have a very high EI of eighty-seven out of a hundred. The test revealed that I operate well in teams and stay calm under pressure. I’m highly in tune with my emotions and feel what others are going through. I can make it easy for people around me to express their opinions without fear of judgment or invalidation. Although emotional intelligence is a crucial skill, the test made me realize that I need to be cautious not to allow other people’s feelings to overwhelm me. There needs to be a boundary between accommodating other people’s emotions and not compromising your decisions or values. I was not surprised by the results because I have often received compliments from my friends and family about my ability to listen and deeply care about others. I am a self-aware person who understands how emotions affect our daily lives. When relating to people around me, I am careful not to invalidate their feelings. I believe that I acquired this skill through my experience because I have had to deal with stressful circumstances that required me to stay calm so as to make sober decisions.
