Clinical information is facts that enable nurses to plan and act effectively (Fitzpatrick, 2006). They obtain these facts through clinical appraisal of research findings. A clinical appraisal is an efficient methodology used to distinguish the strengths and weaknesses of a research article in order to evaluate the convenience and legitimacy of research findings. The major steps of clinical appraisal include; decipher of statistical conclusion, analyzing data, and interpreting data tables.
Decipher of statistical conclusions is trying to find the relationship between an article's conclusion and the variables of the research. We achieve this by interpreting the conclusion. This proves the validity of a conclusion. The t-test is one of the methods used (Polit & Beck, 2004).
Data analyzing is the process of assessing information utilizing diagnostic and logical thinking to examine every part of the available information (Fitzpatrick, 2006). In nursing methods such as before/after studies, experimental designs, and quasi-experimental studies are relevant to the clinical data analysis (Polit & Beck, 2004).
Data tables are a convenient method of presenting research information. Understanding and interpreting statistical data presented in tables is essential in data analysis. To interpret a table one should, check the table layout, check the naming of columns and rows, scan existing total that might assist you in getting the overall trend and be sure to look for additional information (Polit & Beck, 2004).
