Implementing Electronic Health Records (EHR) is commonly a daunting task to undertake, and therefore, planning the process should be carefully done to reduce errors. It is critical to assess the selection criteria and implementation of EHR, including its availability, confidentiality and interoperability, and integrity of data, and that the implementation complies with regulations. Before implementing EHR, the three functional considerations include usability, interoperability, privacy, and security. Usability refers to the ease-of-use of EHR regarding its efficiency, effectiveness, accuracy, and user satisfaction (Katusiime & Pinkwart, 2017). The other consideration that should be made is inter-operability, which refers to the EHR’s standards and architecture that enables it to share information with other HER systems. Additionally, the privacy and security of the EHR should be a key consideration before its implementation. Patient data privacy and security should be prioritized because EHR systems contain sensitive and confidential patient information.
