The Healing Hospital: A Daring Paradigm

A healing hospital should incorporate spiritualism of the patient into evidence –based health care aided by technology to attain a holistic healing of the body, mind, and soul. Often, the healthcare industry has approached the healing of patients in terms of their physiological being that does not consider the patient’s emotional and spiritual being as being the first determinants of the patient’s physical health. In fact, what the healthcare sector specializes in is treatment, not healing. Treatment is a remedy that removes the symptoms. However, the genesis of the symptoms is rarely addressed. For instance, a hospital will care for a patient suffering from diabetes until the condition is manageable to warrant the release of the person to go back home. However, the person’s emotional and mental stability to control conditions that ignite high blood pressure will determine if the person will have a recurrence of an acute diabetic condition or not. On the contrary, healing ensures that the person’s mentality about healthy lifestyles, diets, and responses to stressful conditions is under control. In other words, healing strives to make the person’s spirituality guide the person’s mentality, which determines the person’s physical being. This notion is reinforced by the biblical quote from 3 John 1:2 that states,
“Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.”
According to (Ashcraft, Anthony, & Mancuso, 2010), healing by the incorporation of spirituality taps into a person’s belief system and motivates the person to search for meaning and purpose. The person’s quest for meaning and purpose enables the person to concentrate on the things that matter, thereby giving the person the peace of mind when confronted by the stresses and challenges of life (Dunn, 2010). However, what entails the healing process and how do hospitals ensure healing incorporates the person’s body, mind, and soul? This essay will evaluate the factors inherent in a healing healthcare.
First, the healing hospital should focus on the creation of optimal healing of the patient using an approach that transitions from the person’s inside environment to the person’s outside environment. The person’s inner healing emphasize on the person’s understanding, hope, expectations, and belief. All these factors are about the person’s positive energy to become whole (Samueli Institute, 2011). Another facet of a patient’s inner environment includes the person’s interpersonal skills. In this case, the attending nurse should ensure that the patient’s interpersonal skills are appropriate to ensure that an effective communication relationship that exhibits compassion and empathy is established. This healing relationship can only be cultivated if the hospital’s mission encouraged teamwork based interactions between the caregiver and the patient. Moreover, the cultivation of these healing relationships implies that nurses will have to act physiotherapists to the patients so that the patients actual needs are established and remedial strategies initiated. The patient’s external environment includes all those factors that make the patient relate appropriately with his or her surroundings. The patient’s behaviors are part of the external environment. Therefore, healing will target the change of behaviors such as a person’s diet intake, physical exercise, relaxation, and addiction management. Notably, the alteration of these behaviors to benefit the patient will have to employ an approach of healthcare that is collaborative. In this case, the interventions have to be culturally sensitive, person-centered, and family centered.
Secondly, the healing hospital should have an environment that optimizes the patient’s natural flow of energy. The positive enhancement of the patient’s behaviors requires an environment that is distraction free and emphasizes the natural sources of the internal energy of humans. Empirical studies have proven that these natural forces of energy are instrumental in maintaining the peace of human beings if they provided appropriately. For instance, heat, light, sound, vibration, biochemical reactions, electricity, and other electromagnetic radiations have been proven to have a profound influence on the moods of patients (Waters, 2008). In fact, the earth itself is a huge source of electromagnetic field that affects the energy transfer between organic objects like humans and inorganic materials like metals. Therefore, hospital environments should be designed in such a way that these natural forces from the earth are not distracting to the patients. Consequently, a hospital that intends to heal patient should be eco-friendly, energy efficient, and mimics the natural environment as much as possible. Studies have proved that man’s negation of natural elements like trees and substituting these natural elements with synthetic compounds is a major cause of the increasing number of diseases that affect humans (Clark, Holland, Karakas, Craig, & Moen, 2010). Therefore, natural elements such as color, light, aroma, and sound should resemble their natural form. A healing hospital should ensure that its architecture incorporates artistic forms that emphasize colors that relax the patient’s emotions. The music levels in the hospitals not interfere with the patients’ sleep. Apparently, sleep is one of the processes that facilitate the faster regeneration of cells in the human body (Eberst, 2008). Imperatively, a large section of the hospital’s building should be shielded away from noise-making activities. Another factor to consider is the hospital’s design concerning the work process. Activities regarded as “back-office” should be designated special passageways that minimize the distraction of the patients. In addition, the patients’ privacy should be protected. This protection allows a patient to concentrate on meditative activities that will help in self-realization. Self-realization is a process that requires a lot of privacy and le...
