There is no collectively accepted definition of management as an activity. This is due to the different approaches to the theoretical background of the discipline (Lycett, 2004). Management is usually described based on the perspective, which it is viewed. According to McIlroy (1996), management is the ability to put together and use the available resources, both human and materials, to achieve the goals and objectives of the business organization. It involves creating, directing, maintaining and operating based on the organizations goals through coordinating and controlling human effort (Ejiofor, 1987).
I believe that management process is both an art and a science because of the nature of its functioning. Organizations apply both scientific and artistic techniques in order to achieve effective management. Management involves scientific processes such as analyzing, research and findings. On the other side, these processes are being carried out by human beings who are social. The employees are instructed, motivated and given a healthy working environment; all these are based on the artistic point of view of management. Therefore, there exists a relationship between the artistic and the scientific sides for management process to exist in harmony. Human resource department in the management process in based on the art part of management. Thus, the management process and the general functions of management can only realize its goals with application of both the art and the scientific part on relevant areas.
Management processes as an art is based on the way managers make their employee work more effectively than they would have done, without supervision from their managers. Managers have to be artistic in changing their employees’ attitudes, energies, skills and interests to achieve the goals and objectives of the business organization. All the practices that managers apply towards their employees in an organization for examples, motivation, work, appraisal and workers relations improvement are forms of art. These cannot be achieved without manager’s knowledge of art. These are necessary in order to achieve the set goals and objectives.
Management as a science entails the processes carried out in management of an organization deals with “how” the manager does the management processes. A manager has four pillars in which he or she uses to manage the practices in an organization. These are planning, organizing, directing, directing, and monitor. These scientific pillars must be working right in the management of and organization. Proper management begins with planning, organizing the processes, directing the employees on what is to be done and finally monitor the processes to ensure that effectiveness is achieved (Anderson, 2006).
