Health Concerns and Issues among Arab Immigrants into the USA
Arabian immigrants into the USA are usually faced by certain health issues, complications and concerns during the migration period. Some of the most common health problems include physical injuries, hunger, dehydration, pregnancy related complicated, hypertension and diabetes CITATION Amr12 \l 1033 (Amri, 2012). These can be different among children and adults. For example, female immigrants are braved by reproductive health related complications and vulnerability to communicable diseases. On the other hand, children are more prone to respiratory and abdominal related concerns. This paper will look into some of the common health concerns among Arabian immigrants of all age brackets. These health issues will namely be TB, HIV/AIDS and Influenza.
1 Describe the health concerns and Issues for this immigrant population
The immigrant population’s risk of contracting TB is usually very high. This is owed to the fact that the disease is of high prevalent among their countries of origin CITATION Amr12 \l 1033 (Amri, 2012). TB is spread through the air and through bodily contact with an infected person. For this reason, contact with infected persons should be as minimal as possible. HIV/AIDS is sexually transmitted disease. It is not curable. However, it is manageable and persons living with the disease can live for as long as possible while undergoing treatment. It is a major health concern especially among developing countries some of which are Arabian. On the other hand, Influenza is virus spread respiratory disease. It is most risky especially to expectant women and children. For this reason, these persons are advised to seek occasional vaccination against it in the aim of promoting health and wellness.
2 Describe current pharmacological treatment regimens for the above health concerns
TB is basically treated through the help of TB medications. Antibiotics are the commonly used drugs and can be administered for over a long period of between six to nine months. These medications help in ensuring the TB is latent and that the condition does not worsen. The most common drugs used in the disease’s pharmacological treatment are isoniazid, Rifadin and ethambutol CITATION Arm16 \l 1033 (Armsten, 2016). One can also use these drugs as combinations. Their side effects include nausea, jaundice loss of appetite. Patients are always advised to complete their treatment as doing so is essential. HIV is managed through the help of antiretroviral drugs. They have to take at least three of the drugs in this class. The choice of one’s medication is done usually with the help of a clinician. They are then put under medication from where the caregivers are able to monitor their health progress.
It is important to note that the drugs are taken all through the patient’s life. Treatment should start as early as possible. This is when one’s immune system is still strong. Administration of the drugs throughout the patient’s life ensures that the virus does not multiply. Influenza or commonly known as Flu can be treated through many different ways. Upon diagnosis, the doctor is able to prescribe the most suitable treatment regime for that particular patient. The most commonly used drugs in treating flu are Relenza and Tamiflu CITATION Arm16 \l 1033 (Armsten, 2016). Tamiflu is consumed orally while Relenza is inhaled through a device similar to an asthma inhaler. Related side effects of these drugs include nausea and vomiting. Other home remedies and treatment regimens include intake of a lot of fluids, taking enough rests and consumption of pain relievers.
3 Explain any traditional beliefs and practices associated with the health concerns and issues
Most Arabs are Muslims. Their culture and religion definitely affects their attitudes towards health and wellness. When receiving and providing medical healthcare, they are certain barriers that limit the access to the healthcare being provided. Some of these barriers include sex and gender, respect for modesty and related misconceptions of the related diseases CITATION Bro12 \l 1033 (Browne, 2012). Most of these populations prefer administration of healthcare by caregivers of similar genders as them. A female patient will prefer medical care provision by a female nurse. Their traditions also advocate for modesty and respect all through the health care providing process. Caregivers should practice cultural respect for them despite their cultural differences. There are also certain misconceptions about the diseases that limit the healthcare providing process. Such revolve around how certain diseases such as HIV/AIDS are transmitted. Such should be disregarded as they give false ideas to the populations. These populations also believe in cultural means of treating the diseases such as involving family members in the provision of healthcare.
4 Explain how cultural values and traditional practices might affect acceptance and use of prescribed pharmacological treatments
The immigrant population’s values and traditional practices definitely affect the acceptance of current pharmacological treatments of the said diseases. This is usually in a negative way as most patients are reluctant to use and employ the treatment regimens. This affects the patients’ safety, health outcomes and appropriate use of pharmacology CITATION Wya17 \l 1033 (Wyatt, 2017). Patient safety is restricted in the sense that the risk of the occurrence of medical errors is increased. This can be physical injury, inappropriate administration of drugs hence harm upon the patients CITATION Wya17 \l 1033 (Wyatt, 2017). This consequently limits the patients’ best outcomes. The most desired results are not attained. Treatment then takes a longer period than expected hence a longer period into obtaining proper health and wellness. Pharmacology is also inappropriately used and this consequently limits the healing and treatment process.
