The Health Promotion Matrix
Health refers to a state of complete social, mental, and physical well-being. It does not however mean the absence of illness or disease. On the other hand, health promotion entails engaging in activities with the aim of preventing diseases and promoting the health of an individual and communities (Eldredge et al 504). In this sense, health promotion provides solutions to numerous health problems that face society. Such health concerns include smoking, lack of exercise, and overweight. Overall, health promotion achieves this pivotalrole by promoting knowledge and skills, community action, and providing health services, supportive atmosphere, and healthy public policies.
Health promotion plays a critical role in helping individuals make rational choices and decisions that support their well-being (Eldredge et al504), following that a considerable fraction of ill healthis associated to choices about nutrition, interpersonal relationships, exercise, and use of drugs and substances. The primary characteristic of health promotion is that it is grounded on a universal and holistic outlook of health. Particularly, health promotion makes use of participatory methods and focuses on the causes of ill health (Eldredge et al 517). Importantly, health promotion addresses health in general, rather than health conditions or problems. In other words, health promotion addresses the economic, social, environmental, and behavioral conditions that form the basis of poor health and illnesses. These conditions include social status, education, working conditions, employment, and income. To promote health for individuals as well as at community level, health promotion capitalizes on existing strengths and resources, using various complementary approaches.
The need for health promotion has been influenced by certain factors. To begin with, there are suspicions that the present young generation together with that of their children are likely to age less successfully compared to the present older generation(Kordaand Zena 17). The reason is that while there is a considerable drop in the cigarette smoking rates, the rates of alcohol intake are on the rise. Additionally, only a small percentage of adults exercise regularly enough to sustain good health. As a result, the rates of obesity have drastically increased over the last two decades, worldwide. Kordaand Zenaestablished that obesity is the major health issues that can cause other health complications such as hypertension, diabetes, joint pains, and high cholesterol (16). Thus, addressing obesity through lifestyle measures serves to delay or prevent these health issues associated with obesity.
Economically, it has been established that the cost of managing obesity is approximately £8 billion annually, worldwide; owing that obesity is associated with other diseases such as coronary artery (Kordaand Zena 18).
