Interprofessional collaboration is achieved when healthcare professionals from different backgrounds work together to achieve similar goals within a healthcare department. Interprofessional collaboration aids health care providers in recognizing when the interaction is necessary for the patient's well-being, for correct handoff, and guaranteeing that there are no issues in the clinical context (Schot, Tummers, & Noordegraaf, 2020). It also upgrades the cooperation of healthcare professionals and improves the quality and safety of patient care.
Interprofessional collaboration reduces medical errors that may have deadly consequences. Communication barriers in healthcare occur due to insufficient clinical communication between doctors, nurses, patients, and social workers, whereby doctors prescribe wrong medications and the nurses deliver these incorrect dosages to the patients. These medical errors include misdiagnosis, medication errors, missed symptoms, infections, patient falls, sending patients home too early, surgical and laboratory errors, and wrong documentation that in extreme cases leads to the death of patients (Schot, Tummers, & Noordegraaf, 2020).
