Results management is the ability to manage results of all types electronically including laboratory and radiology procedure reports, both current and historical (IOM, 2003).
Patient support is the patient education and self-monitoring tools including interactive computer based patient education, home telemonitoring and telehealth systems (IOM, 2003).
Administrative processes are the electronic scheduling, billing and claims management systems including electronic scheduling for inpatient and outpatient visits and procedures, electronic insurance eligibility validation, claim authorization and prior approval, identification of possible research study participants and drug recall support (IOM, 2003).

•Despite the challenges, the future of EHRs is an exciting one for patient and clinician alike. 
•Benefits may be realized by stand-alone EHRs as described here, but the most significant transformation will come as interoperability is realized between systems.

There are several implications that the report has on nursing practice. Nursing staff have to practice to the whole extent of their training and education. Opportunities for nurses should be expanded to lead and disseminate collaborative efforts with doctors and other members of the healthcare team to improve practice environments through the use of IT. Healthcare facilities have to engage nursing staff in working with manufacturers and developers in the designing, development, purchase, implementation, as well as assessment of health and medical devices and health IT products. Health care schools and facilities have to promote a culture of lifelong learning and provide resources for interprofessional continuing competency programs.
Technology is of major importance for nurses to expand their roles considering that the use of IT in healthcare today in inevitable. It provides many opportunities for communication as well as knowledge-sharing. Nurses can use Hospital Information System (HIS) to support patient care. An HIS comprise Clinical Systems and Administrative Systems. (i) Clinical systems: Clinical Systems include Nursing Information Systems, and Clinical Information Processing Systems which help nurses to record and store patient data from various clinical settings. Using a Nursing Information System is essential for nurses since it results in increased observation because of forced recall; omissions and errors are removed or reduced with protocol followed; it reduces time in writing notes; and there is increased reliability and accurateness of observations. It also provides a teaching tool for guiding observations (Denisco & Barker, 2013).
(ii) Administrative Systems: these aid the health care organization in supporting the process of patient care and it can be utilized in monitoring patient outcomes and improve safety and quality. Administrative Information Systems include material management, financial systems, quality management, risk management, payroll, and human resources. These systems help in reviewing patient outcome data to assist in identifying trends and making performance improvement. They also help to manage charging and inventory supplies for the health care organization, and in tracking information of applicants and workers as regards work status, credentials, and performance evaluation. An Electronic Health Record (EHR) is also of major importance for nurses in expanding their roles. Using an EHR, a nurse will be able to systematically document the health status and healthcare of a patient in a secured digital format (Denisco & Barker, 2013). The key components of EHR include results management, health information and data; decision support; order entry management; electronic communication and connectivity; patient support; administrative processes; as well as reporting and population health management. The process to become a successful EHR owner has several steps and it necessitates integrating the EHR into both the everyday operations of the organization and its long-term vision, as well as the everyday practice of the clinician (Denisco & Barker, 2013).
