Tools for integrating and Disseminating Knowledge in Advanced Nursing Practice
The conceptual-theoretical-empirical (C-T-E) structure comprises three components: (i) a conceptual model: this refers to a general and abstract system of propositions and concepts. Conceptual models place concepts in a context and guide the formulation of new theories (Fawcett & Garity, 2008). (ii) A theory: this deals with one or more relatively concrete and specific propositions and concepts about a phenomenon. The function of theories is to describe, explicate, and predict a given phenomena (King & Hinds, 2009). (iii) Empirical indicators: an empirical indicator provides a platform with the help of which mid-range theories could be created and examined. They are also known as experimental conditions (Fawcett & Garity, 2008). The majority of theory concepts cannot be observed directly and have to be linked to a real-world proxy; an empirical indicator (Butts & Rich, 2014). Theory and evidence are equivalent in advanced practice nursing. A practice-theory gap exists given that theories are commonly seen as formulations which are irrelevant to practice. In actual fact, Evidence-based practice and theory-based practice are similar. Evidence-based nursing is essentially the critical and purposeful usage of theories. Nonetheless, not every practical action is based on theory (Butts & Rich, 2014).
Translational research is understood as the process employed in determining the costs, resources, as well as conditions that are needed to progress a theory into evidence-based practice. The eventual goal is to decrease the duration of time needed for theories to be translated into protocols ad tools that improve quality of life (Butts & Rich, 2014). Translating theories into evidence-based protocols and tools follows a 7-step sequence. These are (i) identifying a practical problem; (ii) asking questions regarding the problem; (iii) searching for literature regarding the problem; (iv) critical evaluation of the literature; (v) integrati...
