Abstract
This paper focuses on the benefits that the legalization of marijuana has to bring to a community
as explored via three articles and essays found online. The information from each source varies
due to the basis of argument. Some support this argument from a political point of view whereas
support from a medical one.
Should Marijuana be Legalized or Not
The landscape that surrounds the legalization of marijuana is changing fast. The topic is a
trending one and is at the same time controversial. Several perspectives are taken into account
and mostly come down to the personal motives of the debater. Regardless of the basis of
argument government decides the way forward and we are responsible for our own actions. It has
been almost six years since November 2012 when Colorado and Washington became the first
two states in the Union to legalize marijuana for recreational purposes. It’s also been only five
years since December 2013/January 2014 when public sales of the wacky weed were no
longer a criminal offense. These states that have taken steps to legalize public pot sales can offer
a whole list of benefits hence supporting the argument that marijuana should be legalized.
Discussion
This is not an exhaustive list of reasons as to why marijuana should be legalized but it
shows the ones with an upper hand. Majority of the benefits were mostly theoretical until proven
true by the states that went all in by legalizing the sale and use of marijuana for both medicinal
and recreational purposes.
The Doctors For Cannabis Regulation commonly known as DFCR supports the
legalization of marijuana by arguing that the criminalization and prohibition of marijuana does
more harm to the public than the good. Due to this prohibition there are of hundreds of thousands
of annual arrests, racial and economic due to disparities in marijuana enforcement. The
marijuana prices are high and lucrative to violent drug dealers, the DFCR argues that legalizing
and regulating this marijuana market will ensure public safety.
Legalizing marijuana creates a set of quality and safety control as seen in the alcohol and
tobacco industries. Users can exactly know what they are getting and there is reduced risk of
problems occurring such as an overdose due to the addition of unknown and harmful substances
in the marijuana sold on the streets.
There will be an increased tax revenue brought when marijuana is legalized. In the year
2015 legal sales of cannabis and its products in the United States has amounted to 996 million
dollars and the tax collected was 135 million dollars. This money can be used in various ways
such as fund public projects, fix or even build roads, improve schools just but to mention a few.
Marijuana was used as medicinal herb thousands of years before it was in the recent past
