History
Metro Health Hospital dates back to 1942 and existed under the name of Grand Rapids Osteopathic Hospital. Initially it was founded by a small group of osteopathic physicians who committed their personal resources to build a hospital. By 1957, the hospital had a major presence in a residential part of the city. In the mid-90s, the organization was sitting on a land locked piece of land well alienated from any highways. This prompted a need for relocation to create an opportunity for growth. The grand Rapid Press in an editorial described the situation as "It is either move and grow. Or stay and wither”.
The hospital came to be called Metro Health Hospital in October 2005 in anticipation of the move to Metro Health Digital Village in Wyoming. Under the stewardship of the CEO, Mike Faas, Metro Health Hospital moved to a 170 acres piece of land it is currently built on.
Mission
The hospital’s mission is to create the best healthcare facility possible. To realize this mission and vision, the hospital has stretched itself to beyond providing the best services possible but rather has worked on creating the right environment too. According to Aneetha McLellan, the director interior architecture, all products that go into it are part of the healing process and thus they take their mission seriously.
In addition the hospital is a 208 bed facility and has the latest diagnostic and treatment technology, electric communication between caregivers among other innovative technologies and equipment. The incorporation of this technology to the physical environment promotes healing, and welcomes patients, families, physicians and staff; thereby propelling them towards the achievement of their mission. Benjamin Pratt, the regional manager for nature observes that it is the commitment to patient focused healthcare, the passion, focus and team work that everyone has put and how it supports the mission that has made Metro Health Hospital a success story.
Vision
The vision of the Metro Health Hospital is ‘Taking health care to a better place’. To achieve this vision the hospital has been equipped with very qualified, friendly and efficient staff and care givers. State of the art equipment is used to ensure the provision of the best services possible.
Culture
The people at Metro Health Hospital are interested in elevating the experience for the patient. To pursue this, the approach they take is all about supporting the space within health care environments. McLellan points out that the institution strives to create a very warm and special feeling to anyone who visits making them stand out. The hospital helps attract and retain professional staff by attracting patients. The fact that that the facility is environmentally friendly warm and inviting makes the work place very enticing for both the employee and the physician. The culture here therefore is forged from consumer driven choices by the institution.
