Normal Hearing and the Causes of Presbycusis (Essay Sample)

Instructions:

Part A: Explain how normal hearing occurs. Include in your discussion the following points:
1. How is sound transmitted from the environment outside the body to the inner ear?
2. What structures are involved, and how do they transmit sound?
3. What happens in the inner ear (cochlea) when sound waves are converted to neural signals?
4. How is sound frequency (pitch) processed?
Part B: Next,
1. summarize the causes of presbycusis and explain how they will interfere with the normal processing of sound as outlined above.
2. Discuss one source of presbycusis involving a problem with the outer/middle ear.
3. Discuss one source of presbycusis involving a problem with the inner ear.
Part C: Finally, describe what it might be like to have presbycusis. Include the following points:
1. If you have normal hearing now, how would your ability to converse with others be affected?
2. What activities that you now enjoy would be limited by this condition?

Presbycusis
Communication is essential in effective execution and planning. Hearing is one of the critical senses since it helps people maintain healthy relationships with family and friends. It makes it possible to listen, engage, and laugh, thus making life enjoyable. Loss of hearing hinders people's ability to engage and experience several life moments like participating in meaningful conversations with friends and family, listening to favourite TV shows, and hearing lovely voices or laughter. Presbycusis is the gradual loss of hearing, particularly among aged persons. Approximately one-third of individuals over sixty-five years experience presbycusis problems (Wang & Puel, 2020). The paper discusses how normal hearing happens, the causes of presbycusis and experiences of having presbycusis.
How Normal Hearing Occurs
The hearing starts at the outer ear. After the sound produced outside the outer ear, vibrations or sound waves usually transmits through the external auditory canals and strikes the tympanic membrane making the eardrum vibrates. Vibrations are later passed through three tiny bones in the middle of the ear, known as ossicles. Notably, ossicle amplifies sound and sends sound waves to the inner ear through a fluids-filled hearing organ (cochlea). After the sound wave reaches the inner ear, they are changed to electric impulses..
The auditory system usually process how individuals hear and help in understanding the sounds in any environment. The system comprise of brain regions and peripheral structures (inner, middle ear and outer). The three crucial middle ear bones amplifies energy and then transfer it to the cochlea. In the cochlea part, mechanical energy is converted into electrical energy through the auditory receptors cells. Notably, the conversion happens in the inner ear. The cochlea consists of fluids -filled with perilymph which spirals about two and a half turns around the modiolus. The auditory nerves transmit information to nuclei series to the cortex, and this is where the perception happens. Auditory information ascends through the auditory \nerves and pathways. The majority of the auditory information is transmitting
