Critique Paper Student Name Institution Course Number. Course Name Name of Instructor 4th May 2024 Clinical nurses' understanding of the role of the clinical research nurse in the renal unit. The research paper sought to understand and resolve misunderstandings of responsibilities within nurse roles. There was interest in understanding the role of Clinical Research Nurse and distinguishing it from the role of Nurse Researchers. The research was designed and conducted, and the research report was done by Carlito Adan. Adan is a senior research nurse at the Renal Unit of King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, London. She is a senior research Nurse within the same facility where the research was conducted. The research report defined a clinical nurse as "a registered nurse licensed to perform nursing duties and responsibilities” (Adan, 2023: 2). Though it was understood that the research question was to assess understanding of the role of Clinical Research Nurses, the research question and hypothesis were not provided. The research used questionnaires and presented the data as quantitatively analyzed data. A beneficial research objective also outlined in the research report was that the quantitative research was to establish means of improving research awareness and exploring opportunities to improve working relationships (Adan, 2023). This is a qualitative dimension of the research, Though the report shows that qualitative data was collected through questionnaires. The open-ended questionnaires asked the respondents to explain elements such as understanding the role of the CRN, awareness of any research or trials being conducted, visibility of CRNs, their take on patient participation in the research and suggestions for improvement of clinical-research working relationship. The results provided, however, only reflected a limited qualitative analysis of the data, despite the report stating that a descriptive analysis will be used. The report found that 40% of the respondents had no idea of the role of CRNs, with 60% having limited understanding. Less than 47% were aware of clinical research that was in progress in the facility. The descriptive analysis revealed some details about the nurses' knowledge of patient selection and how the working relationship could be improved. For instance, the research paper stated a need for "Good communication, Timely coordination of the schedule of events, Combining clinical–research activities” (Adan, 2023: 12). According to Jackson, Maben, and Anderson (2022, 1), "Nurses understand their work by its role in the healthcare system, rather than by the tasks or activities they complete.” This research also agrees with the research report that it may be confusing for nurses to understand the roles of other nurses as nursing responsibilities are always adapting. Nwankwo (2021) presents a number of very wide responsibilities of Nurses. The research explains that though nurses have a definite role, specialization in different areas makes the roles of the nurses difficult to distinguish and describe accurately. The ability to collaborate between departments is critical but depends on understanding the uniqueness of each of these responsibilities. The results of the research report about CRN reveal that nurses in other departments have a limited understanding of the roles of different nurses, especially the CRN. This limits their ability to collaborate with these nurses. According to Fitchburg State University (2019), nurse researchers are scientists involved in designing research, collecting data, creating methodology, analyzing data and creating a report to answer a research question. Clinical Nurse Researchers are nurses who work in clinical research settings and serve as liaisons between researchers and patient volunteers. The research has one limitation, which the author outlines in the report. The research took a few respondents. The research had only 15 respondents, all nurses from the renal unit of the facility. Fifteen respondents is a very small sample size to collect information from and may present some inaccuracies while interpreting the collected data for general use. All the nurses came from the same department, which presents a troubling conclusio...
