Smoking Cessation Among The Mentally Ill Patients
How Population Health Could be Impacted By The Implementation of the Smoking Cessation Project
The implementation of any project often has its benefits as well as drawbacks. According to the future project of implementing smoking cessation among patients with mental health problems through increasing the clinician’s knowledge, one of the benefits would be an increase in the quit rates among smokers with mental illnesses. Increasing the knowledge of the clinicians about the benefits of smoking cessation would mean that these healthcare professionals would have a better understanding of the population and how they can adjust their approach to addressing the problem within the settings they are working in. According to Young-Wolff, Prochaska and Das (2017), the success of any smoking intervention depends on how clinicians understand the challenges faced by mentally ill patients as well as their health needs. Since this population have high relapse rates, clinicians should understand how they can address the issue in a bid to increase the number of patients willing to adopt recommended quit procedures. Emerging products like electronic cigarettes can be a challenge that can increase the relapse rate because of the addictive nature that nicotine products have. In addition, Young-Wolff et al. (2017) indicate that mental health facilities have a tradition of supporting tobacco use which is highly subsidized or provided for free in order to reduce agitation and as an incentive for mentally ill patients. However, if this tradition is not supported in mental health institutions, the health of the population would be improved. If clinicians gain sufficient knowledge to address such issues, the project would have a positive impact on the health of patients with mental health problems. Clinicians with sufficient knowledge can adopt different strategies to ensure that there is increased smoking cessation among mentally ill patients as well as the high mortality and disparity in smoking rates among the population under consideration.
