Tendon Graft-Palmaris Longus Muscle
The palmaris longus muscle is an essential muscle and facilitates the functioning of the wrist joint. It is a long muscle extending to the palm and ensures the activation of the flexibility of the hand especially at the wrist. Body muscles help in the movement, production of heat, internal organ protection, the shaping of the body and also facilitate the flow of blood. The attachment of muscles in the body parts are dependent on the muscles roles and location, and thus it may attach directly to the skin or the bone. On the other hand, the attachment of the bone to the surface is carried out by the tendons. The palmaris longus muscle starts near the elbow and extends across the middle of the forearm where insertion to the palmar aponeurosis occurs. Despite its importance in a human body, research has shown that 14% of the world’s population lacks the palmaris longus muscle. The muscle has no impact on clenching and tightening ability. Around 86% of the population the tissue is present in the wrist’s palm side especially by flexing of the hand. The paper addresses the tendon graft-palmaris longus muscle and its importance to the human body.
Clinical Significance of Tendon Grafts
Professionals utilize the tendon grafts in hand reconstructive surgery. According to the majority of the surgeons, palmaris longus tendon is a first choice tendon donor since it meets the necessary conditions regarding availability, diameter, and length. Furthermore, the palmaris longus tendons result in no functional deformities when used in tendon grafting of palmaris longus muscle (Ball & Eckersley, 2015). The palmaris longus tendons are an essential donor of all the tendon grafts in replacing the long flexors of the thumbs and fingers. The palmaris longus assumes a superficial position and is also vestigial, and this makes it more significant for use in tendon grafts (Ball & Eckersley, 2015).
In the case that wrist tendon is raptured, the surgeons conduct the removal process of the palmaris longus tendon from the flexor retinaculum. The doctors then carry out tendon grafting to substitute the ruptured tendon. The muscles most susceptible to rupturing are the flexor pollicis longus tendon, and the fingers’ long flexors and such ligaments are supplemented and sometimes substituted with the palmaris longus tendon. The muscle of the palmaris longus is a weak flexor that offers less considerable flexing force for inhibition of wrist movement if the tendons were cut and transferred elsewhere. Doctors take the front leg’s plantaris muscle to replace the palmaris longus muscle in cases where it is absent from the individual. There exist different pros associated with the use of tendon extracted from individual patient’s body (King & Lien, 2017). One of these merits is that it does not introduce strange material into the body shape of the sick person. The tendon graft-palmaris longus muscle has several advantages one of them being the restoration of the wrist extension.
Medical professionals argue that the absence of palmaris longus vary concerning body side. Other factors like gender and ethnicity affect the fitness of the palmaris longus. Some studies reveal that homogenous ethnic population shows different rates of absence. Nevertheless, there is no study to analyze the variation in the occurrence of palmaris longus within a broad-based population. Data collected revealed that around 516 sick people visit the clinics for outpatient purposes (Punja, 2017). Analysis of the received data included variables consisting of ethnic, lateral and also the gender groups. The findings showed the absence of variation in the lack of palmaris longus based on the sex or laterality.
Regarding ethnicity, no variation exists between the Hispanic and non-Hispanic population. The frequency of the PL recorded 14.9 percent and 13.1 percent. Nevertheless, African Americans and Asians reported lowest significance and absence of the PL. African Americans and Asians filed opposite than the Caucasian group. Asian...
