Transcultural nursing theory
The nursing model that I have chosen to build my career in the nursing practice is transcultural nursing theory. Madeleine Leininger developed the transcultural nursing theory to advance the nursing practice (Sagar, 2012). I have chosen the nursing practice theory because it will enable me to understand how culture affects the nursing practice. The theory will help me to provide care to different people from different cultures. It is important to respect other people’s culture, beliefs and values when providing care. Different cultures have different caring behaviors; understanding the concept of culture and its relation to care will enable me to improve my service delivery in regards to providing care.
According to Leininger (2002), transcultural nursing is an important feature of the nursing practice because of the increase in multicultural populations in different parts of the world. It is important for a nurse to provide holistic and individualized care to all patients. The fact that there are many people from different backgrounds poses a significant challenge to nurses in regards to providing individualized care. The nursing theory will be important in my career progression because it will help me appreciate the value of culture. In addition, it will enable me to refrain from developing cultural biasness when providing care. Sagar (2012) asserts that nurses should be culturally competent to ensure that different patients are satisfied with care provision in addition to positive outcomes.
The table below lists the different characteristics of the theory. In addition, I will describe how I will apply the different concepts of the theory in my nursing practice.
Model characteristics for the
Transcultural nursing theory
Application of the Relationship-Based Model to my Advanced Practice Role
1 Cultural competence is important in the nursing career
2 Transcultural nursing theory emphasizes on respecting religious views
3 Intercultural communication is important when providing care for different people from different cultural backgrounds
4 Different cultures have different beliefs about personal space and distance
5 Time and punctuality vary across different cultures
Sagar (2012) defines cultural competence as the ability of an individual to be aware of personal cultural identity and views about the difference between one’s culture and another individual’s culture. An individual who is culturally competent appreciates and understands other people’s cultures without any form of bias. In my nursing practice, I will strive to understand that my culture is not superior to other people’s culture. I will take time to learn other people’s set of beliefs and values and understand why their beliefs are different from mine. I believe that by learning other people’s culture, I will increase the chances of providing quality care and increasing the chances of positive outcomes among my patients.
According to Andrews (2002), religion plays an essential role in providing care because different religions have different views on western medicine and traditional medicine. There are different religions in the world and members of the different religions have different views on medicine. In my nursing practice, I will not develop biasness when providing care because my patients belong to different religions. For example, I will allow my patients to engage in their forms of prayer and worship as they receive care in the hospital.
Different communities practice different forms of communication. In addition, different communities have different forms of non-verbal communication. For example, some communities believe that direct eye contact is rude while other believe it is a sign of respect (Andrews, 2002). In my nursing practice, I will research about how different communities communicate. This will be essential in my nursing practice because it will enable me to form strong social bonds with my patients.
Personal space is important for all individuals. Some people may require others to respect their personal space; ot...
