Usefulness of the HESI Exit Exam in Predicting NCLEX-RN Failure
[Student Name]
[Institution]
[Date]
After graduating from nursing schools, all students are required to take an exam to obtain their license. Without the license a person is not allowed to run their own practice in United States of America. The license can be obtained by graduates taking the exam known as National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX). There are two types of this exam: one is for registered nurses (RN) and the second for practical nurses or nurses in practice (PR).
Institutions and administrations require nursing graduates to take a Health Education Systems, Inc. (HESI) Exit Exam. The HESI Exit Exam assesses students’ knowledge, understanding and ability to apply the studied nursing concepts in certain nursing fields.
The administrations, institutions and faculty related to the nursing field put emphasis on passing the HESI Exit Exam as it is the sole indicator of whether or not a graduate will be able to pass their NCLEX. Even the parents of students pressurize them.
All institutions were facing a very low passing rate in HESI Exit Exam which was leading to a decreased number of nurses obtaining their license. Even though students can take the HESI Exit Exam multiple times until they obtain the required passing score of 850 set by the state, the passing rate was still deficient.
Due to that, this study was conducted to research the relationship between HESI Exit Exam scores and the passing rate of NCLEX-RN. Whether or not The HESI Exit Exam score accurately depicts if a student would pass the NCLEX-RN? What is the relationship between the number of attempts taken to pass the HESI Exit Exam and a students’ ability to pass the NCLEX-RN and what number of attempt and scores are accurate descriptors for students who take NCLEX-RN?
Even though the study focused on students only from one state, it was able to find out that that a student scores in HESI Exit Exam are a wrong depicter of the said students’ ability to pass NCLEX-RN.
It was found that because students can take the HESI Exit Exam multiple times, even though they pass the exam by obtaining the required score 850, the data accumulated from repeated attempts does not reflect properly on how well they might do in their NCLEX-RN.
It was also found that students who took the HESI Exit Exam for the first time and did not obtain the required passing score had a higher chance of passing the NCLEX-RN than the students who took the HESI Exit Exam multiple times and passed it in their final attempt.
