Introduction
Subsequent to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States, it became clear that the Department of Homeland Security [DHS] had to re-strategize on how to secure the nation. This culminated in the Strategic Plan of 2012 (Oliver et al, 2015). In the plan key missions and goals were identified that would be the new focal point of future operations.
This paper briefly discusses the missions and goals that were identified in the strategic plan. The paper concludes that, with constant reviews, the strategic approach is most likely going to enhance security as envisioned.
The DHS Strategic Missions and Goals
The first mission was to secure the country from terrorist threats and enhance security. The specific goals were: understanding the terrorist threat; deterring and disrupting terror operations; protecting potential targets; and, stopping violent extremism and radicalization (Oliver et al, 2015). The second was to secure the country’s borders. The goals were to prevent illegal entry and trade, while protecting legitimate trade and travel (Oliver et al, 2015).
The third mission was to enforce the country’s immigration laws. The goals were to promote lawful immigration, administer immigration laws effectively and integrate legal immigrants into the society (Oliver et al, 2015). The fourth was to secure cyberspace. The goals were to understand and prioritize cyber threats, protect cyber data, prevent cybercrime and develop public-private cooperation or response to cyber incidents (Oliver et al, 2015). The Final one was to build resilience to disasters. This was to be done by reducing vulnerability and mitigating risks to individuals and communities. The overall coordination of responses to disasters was also to be improved (Oliver et al, 2015).
