International relations is very important for continued bilateral gains. Domestic and international politics also plays an important role. In the recent past, the Asian politics has been quite relevant to the study of Australian politics. This could be attributed to the numerous pronouncements that Asia will gain great ascendance. This is with regard to the economy, global politics, and many more aspects. The Australian government therefore seeks to align itself to Asia terming it as the Asian re-engagement. The article explains the different theoretical strategies used by the Australian government in its plan showing its position currently. The article also seeks to discuss the politics of re-engagement giving the theoretical positions and perspectives. When dealing with international politics, domestic policy, international relations, and identity politics are highly regarded. It is important to note that not only are the foreign policies crucial to the re-engagement, but also the domestic policies that can have implications to Asian countries. Several themes have emerged in the article all trying to explain the engagement strategies and the underlying factors behind it. One theme the article brings out is the mixed feelings concerning the Australian re-engagement with Asia. This clearly shows the politics of identity, government interest, and economic concerns. This can be attributed to the authoritarian system of Asian governments and their undemocratic nature. The article explains that the Australian engagement with Asia is complex history and the path of their relationship. A major underlying problem is that Australia views Asia as both valuable and threat. The historical relationship these two continents have had has contributed highly to the present-day understanding of the possible future relationship. The article explains that one major conception of the engagement is the impact on Australia’s western positioning. Over the years, Australia has been trying to depict itself as the bridge between the west and Asia. This could be shown by the proposals of working together to tackle global climate change and the G20. It is important to understand that shifting in economic power can pose threats increasing instability and conflict. With the history the world has had, it is perfectly clear that global power can be dangerous in the wrong hands. The Asia’s authoritative and undemocratic systems of governance have been a major hindrance to this engagement. However, with the promising political and economic realities of the Asian countries, Australia’s economic success was key. The article states that although the Australian government engagement with Asia seemed serious, no coherent strategy has been clearly shown to support this intent.

This created issues and debates about the importance of cultural diversity and the need to fight discrimination and racism. Research shows that a diverse society requires strong cohesion ho nurture the diversity. A culturally diverse society also should have a powerful political structure that enjoys support from all its citizens. The absence of this will reduce the confidence of hosting and welcoming diverse cultures to live within.
