The black Americans are immigrants who came to the United States as slaves from West Indies and Africa. Their sole purpose was to offer cheap labor to the United States as slaves. The black Americans were robbed of their culture and freedom of association as they were merely recognized as a source of cheap labor to the farms of the Caribbean (Upchurch, 2008). The children of the black Americans also joined slavery, not as a matter of choice, but as victim of circumstances. The hard way of life is the genesis of rebellion by the black Americans against the Native Americans and the white settlers.
The frontier in the 1800s is the segregation by the Native Americans against the blacks. The frontier was dominant in areas such as Kentucky. The myth of the American frontier is borne from the tales that shape up the history of America in the 18th, 19th and 20th Centuries. The most common myth in the American frontier is that of the self-made man (Glasrud & Braithwaite, 2009). The myth depicts a lone ranger out to define his own morality code and set his own ethical rules and principles. In this myth, young black Americans have the urge to better their livelihoods by demanding equality.
In early 1800, the black Americans systemized an uprising against slavery led by Gabriel Posser. The white men who led the state of Virginia used their sleuth to unravel the plans of the black and the organizers were hanged. Eight years later, import of salves from Africa is banned by the congress of the United States. The momentum to fight slavery is picked up by the likes of Nat Turner, Wilmot Proviso, Fredrick Douglass and Harriet Tubman who contributed to further black uprising (Glasrud & Braithwaite, 2009). Their efforts got complicated by the argument of the native Americans that slaves, in this case black Americans, cannot demand equality and yet they are not citizens of America. This led to the civil war in 1861 that compelled President Lincoln to free all the slaves under the proclamation of emancipation (Upchurch, 2008)
The opportunities of Black Americans began the 1860s after the emancipation proclamation. Within the 14th constitutional amendment that took place in 1868. In this amendment, those born in America, including slaves, became citizens of America and enjoyed all the rights as Americans. To affirm this, Howard University was instituted to enable the blacks study and practice law. Another impact of closing of the frontier was that the black Americans were able to own land and acquire property.
