The history of slavery
Slavery refers to the phenomena whereby an individual has the power to possess and the right to own, buy and sell other individuals as if they are a form of property (Parish, 2018). The history of slavery can be dated back to many cultures, religions, nationalities and it’s present even in the modern world today. Slavery has had a significant impact in the world we live in both positively and negatively though it was abolished many years ago. This paper will look into the history of slavery from where it began until its abolishment and the impacts it continually has on our contemporary society even today.
Slavery developed in early civilisation due to the onset of social stratification at the Neolithic and agricultural revolution ages. In the hunters and gatherers organizations there was no slavery, but first instances of slavery can be seen in the people of Sumer Mesopotamia a civilization which existed at 3500 BC. In this civilisation, there is documentation to show the setup of the institution and how the slaves were mainly used as the labor workforce in agricultural fields after the development of agriculture.
