Civil war and Slavery
Briefly, when it comes to civil war, the political and economic differences between the North and the South was fueled by the issue of slavery. It implies that slavery played a significant part during the American Civil War. The South remained predominant in the agrarian economy and slavery practices, and the North was extensively industrialized. As a result, the diverse cultural practices and political beliefs started to develop according to Acharya, Blackwell and Sen (2016), research stated that the differences led to conflict and disagreement on the issue concerning tariffs, taxes and internal improvement and states’ rights and federal rights. The issue brought with its union disruption over slavery existence and future. The dispute between the Southern and Northern state led to succession, where the succession resulted to civil war. It implies that the North and Western State along with their territories fought for reservation of the union while southern engaged in war for establishing an Independent Confederation State under a new constitution of their own.
Competition for power over who had authority to control slavery provoked heated debate nationwide. The fight was between the Northerner motive to abolish slavery and southerner desire to continue with their practices of enslaving the African-American as they were a most significant success in labor and economy. These debates would last for several decades and consequently brought about several compromises as the Southern states wanted to grab for slavery control from the western region. On the other hand, the Northern states were obliged to keeping them accessible to local labor. The southerner relied on the slaves in agricultural and industrial labor, repairing railroads while the freed whites served as soldiers. Hence, the southerner could not let go of the slave business and created conflict that led to civil war with Northern and western Union as they were fighting on the right of freedom for slaves. The war was all about civil rights and civil liberty to reach the goal of great America with people who have equal rights regardless of color or ethnicity.
In 1860, Abraham Lincoln, who was from the Republican Party, was elected as President and this made the whole notion became a field of political agenda on the abolition of slavery. President Lincoln victory, which had no single vote from the southern states, appeared to them as if they had forfeited their reputation (Miller, 2019). They felt excluded from the political structure, and therefore, they chose the other alternative they considered would help them, which were breakaway, a decision that led the nation directly into the conflict. President Abraham Lincoln noted that his outstanding goal in the struggle was to liberate the union of slaves and not to destroy or harbor slavery.
However, the southerner feared the prompt of the threat the Northerner manufacturers had created as they benefited from the increased cost of goods in the South. The southerner was concerned on the abomination of tariffs as the inflammatory legislation passed by the Northern politicians imposed a duty on the imported product to southerners and had risen to half in price (Jones et al., 2018). The reason was that the southerner used to ship right from France and England and as a return, they received inexpensive European products. Hence, the taxes escalated on the proclamation act to reduce the taxes and abolish slavery for both sides.
If he was able to save the Union without freeing slave, then he was willing to do that and also if he would save it through setting all the slaves free, again he was ready to accomplish that and or to save it by leaving others and freeing some again he was ready to do that. The compromise to set slaves free came slowly and from many sides. The primary issue that contributed to the rupturing of the Union status quo contradicted the future of slavery. The deliberation steered further separation leading to a conflict in which the northern states and territories along with westerners fought to defend the political agenda. On contrary, the southern states were fighting to defend their states and self-rule as a confederation states sanctioned by their laws.
It was visible that civil war was one factor caused by slavery right of freedom. Most Americans, especially those with African origin, felt deep in their hearts that slavery was morally wrong and was a mockery to Americans when independence was declared and was embedded in the virtues of equality of humans. Some states upheld slavery still in the union. This contradiction sparked some reaction in the Northern states who decided to do away with slavery while the southern states clung on to slavery a thing which brought division between the two regions.
While others all they wanted was to save their unity. Radical advocates like John Brown and others incited citizens to see that the slaves were handed their freedom and bring about rioting. Many more advocates such as Frederick Douglass and Henry Ward Beecher worked for very many years to demonstrate that slavery was not morally upright. Customarily, African slaves advocated for union victory while great efforts were made by the confederacy to keep the slaves under their control. When the war was over, veterans of the confederation boycotted this counteraction and declared to give credence to slaves being loyal at heart.
Slaves in the south were used to work in large farms and accomplish other duties as well. During the civil war, some African American freed from the southern state and sought refuge to the Northern, where they help with informati
