Desegregation bussing integrates people of different races, faiths, and nationalities to learn that they are equal. This strategy entailed transporting pupils to schools inside or outside their neighborhoods to diversify the racial makeup. Furthermore, by the 1970s, desegregation bussing had evolved into two-way bussing, with white children being bussed to minority schools and students of color being bussed to white-majority schools (Honey & Smrekar, 2020, p. 600). Positive effects of bussing have contributed to a reduction in racial discrimination, such as higher educational quality and a lower likelihood of poverty.
In terms of enhanced educational quality, desegregation busing allowed black and white kids to attend the same schools, highlighting the need for equal funding in all schools. In contrast to the segregation era, black schools were denied proper funding. Furthermore, desegregation provided all schools with the opportunity to have enough teachers, adequate infrastructure, and educational materials Serbulo, 2019, p. 3292). This greatly reduced discrimination because all races received the same education; hence, all parties involved considered themselves equals. Nonetheless, this is one way that the practice helped to reduce racial discrimination.
Furthermore, it minimizes the likelihood of poverty by assuring equal opportunities for whites and people of color. As a result, attending integrated schools increases the likelihood of graduating high school with greater test scores and entering college. Furthermore, the dropout rate among black pupils has dramatically decreased (Savage, 2018, p. 129). As a result, blacks now have equal access to employment possibilities as whites, helping them to better their socioeconomic condition. This is how desegregation has reduced the likelihood of poverty.
Despite the civil rights movement's long-standing attempts to remove segregation and racial discrimination, many American schools remain completely segregated today. According to Savage's (2018, p. 129) survey, more than half of all children in the United States attend more than 75% white or 75% nonwhite schools (Honey & Smrekar, 2020, p. 660). School segregation persists implicitly in the United States, with racial prejudice rising. Despite such numbers, many people and leaders deny that racism exists. As a result, gerrymandered school districts' racial and economic segregation divides the community and deprives students of their ultimate freedom and opportunity (Serbulo, 2019, p. 3292). Families with greater financial muscles or higher social prestige, on the other hand, preserve both freedom and opportunity. For example, rather than being a partial solution, housing segregation ensures that district boundaries reinforce society's fundamental disparities of opportunity.
Despite integration busing initiatives and attempts, many people in the twenty-first century continue to face racial injustices and unfair prejudice. Although numerous groups, including Latinos, Jews, Muslims, and others, face racial prejudice, only individuals of African origin face acute racial persecution since they were seized in their homeland and transported here against their choice, where they were sold into slavery (Savage, 2018, p. 130). Their family structure had been ruthlessly shattered and cruelly dehumanized. Furthermore, the same race has been subjected to Jim Crow laws for almost a century (Serbulo, 2019, p. 3293).
