Effects of War on Women in Africa
Liberia is one of the African countries that experienced domestic wars. Armed conflicts have varying effects on people of a different gender. Women are the most affected by such events. Examining the impact of war on African women is essential to understanding ways of mitigating the effects and helping survivors cope with the situation. One of the reasons I chose to examine the impact of war on women is the differences in the needs of specific genders. Women, for example, are among the marginalized population in various parts of the world.
There have also been instances where the military uses sexual violence to achieve a particular agenda during wars. The paper will also examine ways adopted by African women to cope with the challenges faced by armed conflicts and the effects of the various approaches. Africa is an excellent case study because the continent is developing, and such studies will ensure people do not repeat the mistakes they made in the future. The need to ensure a progressive society requires a thorough understanding of the effects experienced by women during wars and the approaches adopted to counter the adverse effects.
Effects of the War on Women
One adverse effect of wars on women in Africa was increased sexual violence. Over 250,000 women and girls got raped in Liberia and Guinea (Mama & Okazawa-Rey, 2012). Studies indicate a higher likelihood of sexual-related issues when an armed conflict occurs (Madzima, 2013). In addition, sexual harassment and intimidations are among the most effective tools used during wars. During the clashes, there were increased cases of well-organized and executed rape and assault on women in countries like Liberia and Nigeria (Mama & Okazawa-Rey, 2012). Mutilating the sexual organs of women and girls was another method used by military personnel to instill fear and discourage opponents from participating in conflicts.
