Functions of political parties
Political parties can be termed as organizations that consist of people trying to reach for goals in common through the acquisition of political power. Political parties are responsible for some important functions. One of the functions of political parties is to draw people to political ideas and philosophies together. People with similar interests can meet, organize and campaign together through political parties even though they do not agree on all matters.
Parties are a means of exercising political power. Every federal, state and territory government consists of people who belong to political parties (Richard, 1970). In normal elections, the electors usually vote for parties rather than individual candidates. People exercise their right to vote by selecting the best party that they believe can lead them to the respective term. Parties select the best candidates that will contest for elections in the public office. This pre-selection makes sure that the choice offered to the voters is the same choice that will be offered to the respective parties. This mode of pre-selection is common in safe seats where only one party is consistent to win (Richard, 1970). With the provision of candidates for election, parties indirectly provide a nation's political leaders.
At the beginning of the arena, political parties are responsible for the provision of the government and opposition (Stephen, 2004). The party that wins the elections by the majority seats in the house of the representatives forms the ruling government. The party winning as the runner-up forms the opposition. The political debates are largely defined are largely defined by the government versus the oppositions. Parties also provide organizational support (Stephen, 2004). The political party machines are responsible for organizing and financing the election campaigns, developing qualities and recruiting the members. Organizational support of political parties is essential for the unity and preventing the dynamicity of the party's preliminary members.
Parties are also responsible for the articulation of philosophies and the development of philosophies (Busky, 2000). The parties are also determinations of the methods of debates and formulation of policies that are to be presented to the electorate during the election campaigns. In both the governments and the opposition systems, the parties utilize their policy-making processes to determine their attitude to the making of the laws and the activities of the particular days.
Parties are also channels that assist the community groups to make effective decisions (Richard, 1970). Many groups have been closing their links with political parties with the national parties.
