How and why did the Industrial Revolution spread to the rest of Europe after 1815
In the late 17th Century, Britain, unlike any other continental country of Europe, witnessed an unprecedented growth in industrialization, dabbed as the “Industrial Revolution,” due to population growth that ensured constant labor supply, availability of energy sources like coal and abundance of agricultural produce resulting from the success of the agrarian revolution in the earlier days. However, by 1815, the industrial revolution had started to systematically spread to the rest of Europe due to the growing demand for British technology by other European countries like France, the desire to reduce dependence on British goods, which had already flooded European markets, and establishment of large joint-investment banks that created enormous capital resources vital for driving the industries.
In early 1800, Belgium, France, and Germany, the first three European countries to industrialize, were predominantly agricultural and had very few machines and technicians to take their production to the next level. As a result, they imported British technology and skilled labor despite fierce resistance from London through the legislative process (Mokyr 321). As more skilled mechanics and a few accomplished entrepreneurs like John Cockerill of Belgium spread to other parts of Europe, the continent gradually achieved technological independence as locals acquired the knowledge and
